Experimental Psychology Society

Dorothy has been an inspirational and active member of the EPS throughout her career. She served as President in 2000 and in 2020 she established the Kuppuraj Bishop grant to enable ECRs from the Global South to further their research. Her distinction has been recognised by the society’s Mid-Career award in 2005 and Sir Frederic Bartlett award in 2019. We are delighted to support her Festschrift and to join the celebrations as the community marks her many academic and scientific contributions.

As publisher of the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, we are pleased to support this event. Dorothy has contributed to the life of the journal as an Associate Editor, author and reviewer. Her 47th Sir Frederic Bartlett lecture “The psychology of experimental psychologists: overcoming cognitive constraints to improve research” is available open-access on our site.

St. John’s College — University of Oxford

Dorothy joined St John’s as a Supernumerary Fellow in 2006. She brings the highest levels of excellence to our community alongside her characteristic spirit and positive approach. She was elected to an Honorary Fellowship in 2021 in recognition of her academic distinction. Although retirement is imminent, we know she will continue to enrich college life and make us proud.

UK Reproducibility Network (UKRN)

Dorothy was absolutely central to our formation. A fierce advocate for open science, she argued for the need for to reform of scientific working practices. She persistently lobbied funders to support grassroots, academic-led efforts to drive change. She continued to support UKRN after our launch in 2019, chairing our Advisory Board and acting as both a critical friend and an ally. Although we miss her direct input, we know that she continues to challenge, and hold feet to the fire – both ours and others'. Long may that continue…

Gorilla Experiment Builder

Dorothy Bishop has been a valued champion and friend to Gorilla. She persuaded the University of Oxford to embrace online research methods before Covid-19 struck, and has pioneered the use of gamified research protocols when testing children. She's successfully pushed the frontiers of what is possible, and shown the research community how to do that while maintaining research integrity and quality. She's always been generous with her time and counsel, for which we are truly grateful.

British Neuroscience Association

Dorothy was founding member of the BNA Credibility Advisory Board. Always generous with her time, expertise and patience with those of us still learning, Dorothy’s input for the BNA has included speaking on behalf of our campaign, helping to launch and award the BNA’s first Credibility Prizes in 2021, and helping shape responses to Parliament. She recently stepped down from her role at the BNA but her legacy will be everlasting.

Department of Experimental Psychology - University of Oxford

Dorothy started her psychological life as a student in the 1970s and we welcomed her back as a professor in 1998. Alongside her own research excellence, Dorothy has been instrumental in establishing and sustaining a range of mentorship activities, and in so many ways she is a mentor to us all. Her advocacy for open and transparent science has been felt in many ways – from supporting and empowering individuals through to national and international initiatives at scale.

NAPLIC

Dorothy has had a close relationship with NAPLIC and individual members of the organisation over a number of years. Dorothy has spoken at our conferences on a number of occasions and contributed to our publications also. But most of all we have appreciated Dorothy’s support and leadership for the whole field. Dorothy’s research has had real and significant impacts on practitioners and how we work with children and young people with DLD. National Association of Professionals concerned with Language Impairment in Children.

RADLD

Dorothy was a key player in the establishment of RADLD (Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder; previously RALLI). Her commitment cannot be over-exaggerated. Without Dorothy’s involvement awareness of language disorders and indeed the term ‘Developmental Language Disorder’ would not be where they are today. RADLD will continue to work hard to carry on this important work.

ACAMH

Dorothy Bishop made a huge contribution to JCPP as an editor and author. She championed research in Developmental Language Disorders through her papers and editorials. ACAMH is pleased to be part of the Festschrift. JCPP will soon publish a virtual issue based on Dorothy's published papers in the journal.
